The Labor Wire

Nov. 13, 2018
A week after Election Day, working people are keeping up the fight for our economic rights. After winning at the ballot box, the labor movement is notching victories in workplaces across the country. From San Diego to Washington, D.C., we are continuing to build a brighter future for working families.
Message of the Day—We’re Still Fighting
Check out just a few of the recent wins propelling our movement forward:
• Hospitality workers represented by UNITE HERE Local 30 ratified a new contract with the Westin San Diego Gaslamp Quarter hotel, ending a 35-day strike. The 162 workers voted unanimously, after working without a contract since April of last year.
• Graduate students at Georgetown University voted overwhelmingly to be represented by the Georgetown Alliance of Graduate Employees (GAGE) in affiliation with the AFT.
• The United Steelworkers (USW) last month struck a new master agreement with U.S. Steel Corp., breaking a three-year wage freeze for 16,000 workers at facilities across the country.
Keep up to date on all of the most recent worker wins on the AFL-CIO’s blog.

Save Our Call Center Jobs!

DISTRICT 6

September 17, 2018

FROM:       Derrick Osobase, Administrative Director

SUBJECT:   Tell Congress to Save our Call Center Jobs!

In recent years, AT&T, Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile and other companies have closed call centers in the United States and sent thousands of valuable service-sector jobs overseas. CWA is calling on Congress to pass legislation in the House and Senate to stop U.S. companies from offshoring customer service jobs. If passed, bills H.R. 1300 or S. 515 would make companies that offshore call center jobs ineligible for certain federal grants and tax-payer funded loans. These bills also would require U.S. callers to be told the geographic location of the call centers they’ve been connected to and offered the opportunity to be connected to U.S.-based call centers.

Please take a moment to sign and share the petition (link below), and share with your membership and LP Coordinators.

Also, click here for more information about the bills, along with some research CWA has done on the effects of offshoring call center jobs.
